Winter 2010 Update
| A much wetter and milder summer than last year ensured good fishing at Millbrook right through the hottest time of year. This probably contributed to some of the best conditioned trout going in to autumn we’ve seen up here. Consistently fat, heavy fish have been the norm, while long, skinny ‘slabs’ have been almost absent. The autumn dun hatches were excellent; the best ever at Bunninyong for any time of year. In fact sometimes the hatches were almost too heavy, with the fish lazily nymphing and only sporadically taking the dry. Nevertheless there were some magnificent moments with very large trout sipping every dun on the water and taking artificials just as methodically. Then there was the small matter of landing the fish – Bunny must have set some sort of record lately for Millbrook bust-offs. The dual mottos of this autumn would be always bring a landing net and plenty of backing when you visit Millbrook! Meanwhile Harbours and Bluegum have fished very consistently, a late autumn highlight being trout feeding on adult dragonflies. With the help of Pro-Angler Geelong’s Trevor Martin, we eventually cracked the code and enjoyed some superb giant dry fly fishing. Baby Blue has been surprisingly productive, probably yielding more fish landed in 2010 than ever. Don’t worry though, the smelters are still quite capable of driving you mad! Macphersons is fishing quite well too as the weed breaks up, and has produced some great smelters and tailers. As we go into winter, tailers, midge feeders, smelters and polaroiding look like being the norm and we expect some double-figure trout to be landed along with plenty of the 3 to 8 pounders dominating the 2010 catches to date. Hope to see you up here soon! |
