End of Spring 2025

6/12/2025

After our driest-ever year in 2024, we’d been closely watching the skies for more rain in 2025.  After all, for Millbrook’s lake fisheries, rain is effectively trout water falling from the sky.

Fortunately, the weather gods have been kind for the latter part of 2025, culminating in our wettest month in 3 years this November (and also one of the coldest). As we go into summer, some lakes are full, and most have at least a respectable amount of water. While we have no idea what the future will bring (and yep, we’ve learnt BOM has no idea either) at least this ‘water in the bank’ gives us more confidence for guiding season 2026 than we’ve had in ages.

To the actual spring fishing, and it was as variable as any the guiding team can recall. Never mind day to day, it wasn’t uncommon for a given lake to fish brilliantly in the morning, and then poorly in the afternoon… and vice versa. Also, it was our second-worst mayfly spring in Millbrook‘s 30 years, but probably our best for midge. And before you ask, no, we don’t know why. We’re happy to make something up, although somehow, such theories are never quite as convincing in retrospect!

Through it all, thanks to our guests, it’s been the most heavily-booked season in Millbrook’s history.
And we’ve been genuinely delighted to be there for a lot of first-on-fly captures, plus plenty of PBs.

Roll on 2026!
